Gizelle Moreno Collects Triple-Double in Sophomore Night Win over Santa Monica

VALLEY GLEN, CA - The LAVC Women's Basketball team celebrated Sophomore Night with a 81-66 win over Santa Monica.

It was a close game throughout the first half, with several lead changes back-and-forth for both the Monarchs and Santa Monica.  The first half ended with the close score of 32-28, with the Monarchs on top.

The second half the Monarchs started to pull away with the help of freshman Gizelle Moreno.  Moreno collected 15 rebounds, including four offensive rebounds, dolled out 15 assists and put in 11 points for the Monarchs.  Her triple-double almost did not come, though. With three minutes left in the game, everyone in the South Gym realized Moreno was a bucket away from a triple-double.  Every time down the court the Monarchs centered their offense around Moreno getting the ball and hitting her shot.  It was on the fourth try that Moreno finally hit her shot giving her 11 points and her triple-double.  The gym erupted and you could see Moreno's smile across the gym.

Besides Moreno' incredible game, two stats stood out as ways the Monarchs were able to pull away from Santa Monica in the long run.  The Monarchs dominated in fast break points - leading Santa Monica 13-0 in that stat - as well as bench points - with the Monarchs putting up 16 and Santa Monica just two.

The Monarchs hit the road for a game at West L.A. on Wednesday, February 21 at 7:00 p.m.
