Monarchs Sweep Canyons

SANTA CLARITA - Men's and Women's Basketball opened up the Western State Conference with a clean sweep of Canyons Wednesday night.

The Women opened the night with a 58-39 win over the Cougars.  The Monarchs jumped out to a dominant lead in the first quarter, going into the second up 21-6.  Canyons attempted to come back throughout the game but the Monarchs were able to stave off the challenge and solidify the win.  Sophomore Jordyn Jiron (pictured) had a commanding performance scoring 17 points, collecting eight rebounds and blocking four shots.  Fellow sophomore Leena Vo was the other double-digit scorer for the Monarchs - she had 13 points and contributed three assists.

Men's Basketball finished the sweep with a 76-70 come-from-behind win.  At the end of the first half, Canyons had a solid 35-29 lead over the Monarchs.  After a rousing half time speech, the Monarchs chipped away at Canyon's lead and eventually took the lead with 12 minutes to go in the second half.  Once the lead was taken, the Monarchs did not look back and hammered home the win.  Sargent Jeffrey (pictured) was a huge part of the Monarchs comeback - he tallied a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.  The Monarchs had four men in double-digit scoring - Jeffrey, David Huggins with a team leading 19, Manny Kapoushian had 12 and Andre Perris had 10.

Both Monarchs teams are now 1-0 in Conference play.  Western State Conference play rolls on Saturday when both Monarchs teams host Antelope Valley - tip off for the Women will be at 3:00pm, the Men will follow at 5:00pm.
