Baseball Sweeps Cypress in First Round of 3C2A Playoffs

VALLEY GLEN, CA -  The Los Angeles Valley College Baseball team swept Cypress over the weekend to move to the second round of 3C2A playoffs.

The first game saw the Monarchs hit four different, timely home runs to propel the team to victory.  Down 4-0 in the fifth inning, Royce Clayton, Jr. and Sebastian Garcia hit back-to-back home runs to cut the Chargers lead in half, making the game 4-2.  Later that same fifth inning, Oskar Stark hit a three run home run to put the Monarchs up 5-4.  That lead was quickly squandered and Baseball found themselves down 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning.

It wasn't looking good for the Monarchs when Cypress got two quick outs to start the bottom of the eighth.  Keeping hope alive, though, Alden Quintanilla had a tough at bat, running the count to a full count, eventually winning the battle and walking.  Rattled from Quintanilla's at bat, Cypress's pitcher walked Vic Pico, putting two runners on with two outs.  In the most clutch situation, Will White came up to the plate and smacked the go-ahead, three-run home run to put the Monarchs up 8-7.

Brett Edwards came in in the top of the ninth inning to get the save and finalize the win.

The Monarchs second game against Cypress was less stressful, with a winning score of 14-7.

Right away Baseball jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  They piled on throughout the game and never let Cypress tie or take the lead in the game. Lucas Gabay was 2-3 with a home run, three runs batted in and two runs scored.  Dorian Asher also had three RBIs on one hit.

The Monarchs will also host second round of 3C2A playoffs - it will feature Valley, Saddleback and Fullerton Colleges.  Games will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 9-11.  Times of game will depend on who wins and loses games.  Check back for specifics.

Great state to playoffs Monarchs!
