Baseball Beats Cuesta in Three, Moves to CCCAA Super Regionals

The L.A. Valley College Baseball team has moved on to the CCCAA Super Regional round after beating Cuesta 2-1 in games.

The Monarchs lost a tough game one, 1-0, in 10 innings.  Pitching on both sides was excellent and it took Cuesta walking it off in the tenth, to put Valley down and one loss away from being eliminated from playoffs. Day two was the Monarch's day, though!

Game two was another close match-up, with the Monarchs surviving elimination with a 2-0 win.  The first two innings saw Valley score - Royce Clayton, Jr. scored on a balk in the first inning; Will White scored in the second inning on a wild pitch. Offensively it was all the Monarchs needed.  Daniel Tovar and Drew Gustafson teamed up on the mound to shut Cuesta out.  Tovar threw six scoreless innings striking out six.  Gustafson relieved him and threw the final three innings striking out 5.

With the series tied up 1-1, Cuesta and Valley headed to game three with the winner moving on to the Super Regional round.  Once again, the two teams found themselves tied at the end of nine innings, 5-5.  Not wasting any time, the Monarchs got on base and scored four in the top of the tenth - Luis Torres hit in a run on a fielder's choice to put the Monarchs ahead by one.  Brandon Cuervo busted the game open hitting a bases clearing double, scoring three.  The final score of game three, and the one that pushed the Monarchs to the Super Regional round, was 9-6.

Super Regionals is a double-elimination format.  Three teams - Valley, East L.A. and Fullerton - will be playing against each other Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 11-13 for a spot in the Regional Finals.  The Monarch's first game will take place Thursday, May 11, at 11 a.m. against East L.A.
