Former Coach and Athletic Director Jim Fenwick Honored by 3C2A
In the annals of Valley College history, his would be considered a stellar career. Yet with all of his wins, post-season achievements, and top ten national rankings, Jim Fenwick would probably note that he was an educator first, always reminding the importance of the classroom to his players. Yet it was his accomplishments on the gridiron that earned for him induction into the Callifornia Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) Hall of Fame at a ceremony held on March 8 in Visalia, California.
In nine seasons as head coach (1991-1996, 2009-2012), Fenwick pieced together an incredible 64-39-1 record which included four post-season contests. While his first two seasons could be considered "building years," he finally hit his stride in 1993 when the Green and Gold was the proverbial power to be reckoned with. At that time, there were no national polls, but in what was termed the "mythical national poll" Fenwick's teams were consistently at or near the top.
Untold here are the numerous players who transitioned to the next level, many at Division I schools.
Following the 2012 season, Fenwick moved into the role of the Monarchs' athletic director. In his new position, he was able to dedicate his energy to the betterment of all the student-athletes, and his impact was notably widely felt.
But the cancer which was first diagnosed in 2004 returned in 2020, and following two bone marrow transplants, Fenwick passed away on February 17, 2022.
In addition to the 3C2A honor, Fenwick was inducted into the LAVC Hall of Fame in 2007.
